Houthis Undermining Peace in Yemen, Delegate Urges Political Solution

The United Nations has warned that Yemen's fragile security gains since the 2022 truce risk collapse due to escalating violence. Special Envoy Hans Grundberg told the Security Council that Ansar Allah (Houthi movement) has intensified attacks on Israel and in the Red Sea, prompting retaliatory strikes from the U.S., U.K., and Israel, damaging critical infrastructure like Sana’a Airport and Hudaydah Port.

Assistant Secretary-General Joyce Msuya noted a worsening humanitarian crisis, with 19.5 million Yemenis requiring aid and vital port damage hampering food and medicine imports. Delegates urged the Houthis to cease attacks, release detainees, and allow aid delivery.

Countries including the U.K., Denmark, and the U.S. condemned Houthi aggression, called for compliance with international law, and stressed the need to curb arms flows. Emphasizing diplomacy over violence, officials called on all parties to de-escalate and work toward peace, warning of severe humanitarian and regional consequences.
